I'm sure you have read in the papers that an increasing number of people are joining the triathlons or marathons every year. What a great change from the scenario some years ago!

I remember just a couple of years ago, getting sponsors to sponsor similar events would be like asking for the sky as sponsors then knew that the target audience was just a very small group of people and being so niche would not reap monetary benefits or boost sales for them.

Fast forward to today…and we have the Osim Triathlon, NUS Biathlon, Army Half Marathon, Standard Chartered Marathon, JP Morgan Chaste Run, and so many more similar events in a single year! The queues just to sign up for these marathons and triathlons are even longer than the 'Hello Kitty' craze in Singapore. So what has sparked the sudden surge in the number of participants over the years?

If you haven't taken part in any of these events till date, I must say you're missing out a lot of excitement in your life! The societal pressure is increasing as more and more of the people are taking part in these events.

Start opening your ears to listen to conversations along these lines in your daily life, "Oh are you joining the Standard Chartered Marathon?", "Hey let's sign up for the JP Morgan Chaste Run!! Everyone is doing it!!" Yes, it is becoming a fad to participate in these events. Employees in some companies even participate in full force and see it as a good bonding activity for staff.

In fact, there are many clubs out there that organise get-together-weekly runs and my dear friend, if you haven't realised it, the latest way of meeting people is through joining such activities.

Today, it is no longer just exercising to keep fit and staying healthy. It is about the whole package that comes together. The meeting of new people, the usual gathering for a good breakfast after a nice cooling morning run, and most importantly, exercising in that nice crisp sports attire that you have just gotten. It just makes you feel totally awesome doing all these.

So why do people want to join these physically exhausting and mentally draining activities? Well, it is the great sense of achievement and satisfaction when one completes a race.
