Fat or Fats??
You hear this all the time from people saying he/she is fat, this food is so fattening, blah blah blah. So what does fat really mean? Today I'm gonna tell you what exactly is fat.
Fat is generally obtained through two main sources - our body and the food we take. Our body has the capacity to produce fats on its own but most of it comes from the food we take.
Each gram of fat is equivalent to 9 calories whereas there are only 4 calories for every gram of protein and carbohydrate. Therefore it is wrong to assume that every calorie you take is the same.
While protein is used for the repair an building of muscles, and carbohydrate used for providing energy, fats taken will be stored as fats in your body. So it is only wise to reduce the amount of fats intake if you wanna lose fats. However not all fats are bad. Below are the various kind of fats to help you understand you fats better.
Saturated fats
Saturated fat is the main cause of high blood cholesterol and it is found in all animal products and some plants such as coconut. Therefore it is best you avoid saturated fats when you take any of the aforementioned by trimming away the fats.
Unsaturated fats
The two unsaturated fats are Polyunsaturated and Monounsaturated fats and they are mostly found in plant oil. Polyunsaturated fat contains the essential nutrient acids such as omega-3 and omega-6.
Trans fat
This fat is an artificial fat used to preserve food and is the main cause of heart attack as it doesn't melt due to these fats undergo a chemical process call hydrogenation. This fat is more commonly found in confectionaries, chocolates and preserved food.
Essential fatty acids
These fats are required for normal cell function and are used to supplement the brain. As the body does not produce this kind of fat, one can only obtain them through food such as fish, canola oil, primrose oil, pumpkin and or sources.
Hidden fats
There are some food which contain tons of hidden fats although they might look "clean" on the surface. These food are sweetened drinks, fruit juice, alcohol, confectionaries and lots more.
